Despite the significant advertising push WWE enjoyed in the run-up to SmackDown’s premiere on FOX, it hasn’t stopped ratings dropping week after week. The promotion has also been losing the ratings war against All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Their black-and-gold brand NXT airs against TNT’s AEW: Dynamite on Wedneday nights.
Aesthetic changes to the shows haven’t been enough to distract fans from the quality issues WWE has been suffering with. Most recently, the Hell in a Cell main event between Seth Rollins and ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt came under fire from fans and industry professionals because of WWE’s creative decisions. Even former-SmackDown Executive Director, Eric Bischoff, was recently fired and replaced in an effort to try and reshape WWE’s product.
These issues haven’t been overlooked by WWE personnel and talent.
Bryan Alveraz commented on WWE’s issues during a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Live. He stressed that morale backstage has taken a hit over the past few weeks.
“I was told today, there may be more [releases] coming, who knows? Morale has not been good for a long time but apparently the morale has taken an even bigger hit since October 1st. If you recall, the belief within WWE … their idea was ‘oh my god, we’re going to FOX and a new boom period is going to kick off.”
SmackDown on FOX lost a million viewers between the premiere episode and follow up episode the week after. Alvarez noted how the WWE Draft was a mess, despite WWE’s proclamations that everything had been planned out in advance.
