It appears that WWE will be getting into ESports by launching its own gaming league.
This comes after the company filed to trademark “WWE SGL” & “Superstar Gaming League” on Monday, November 11.
As of this writing, there’s no word yet on when it will launch. The trademark was filed with the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office):
“Entertainment services, namely, the production and distribution of an ongoing show in the nature of video games; gaming services in the nature of conducting online computer game tournaments; providing a web-based system and on-line portal for customers to participate in on-line gaming, operation and coordination of game tournaments, leagues and tours for recreational computer game playing purposes; organization of electronic game competitions; entertainment services, namely, production and distribution of a game show; entertainment services, namely, conducting live video games; provision of information relating to electronic computer games provided via the internet; entertainment services, namely, providing on-line computer games; providing ratings and reviews for video game content; entertainment services, namely, providing a website featuring games; entertainment services, namely, providing on-line reviews of computer games; gaming services in the nature of conducting online computer game tournaments; organization of electronic game competitions”
Over the last few years, ESports has become extremely popular with kids and young adults. This is something that WWE appears to understand as they need to reach younger fans.
For years, they’ve drawn an older audience for their weekly television programs (Monday Night RAW, SmackDown, and now NXT). The average age of WWE’s viewers is 50-years-old.
An example of a top sports league to recently get into ESports is NASCAR, which also has an older demographic of fans, as they invested in an ESports league over the last two years with their yearly video game releases.
For decades now, WWE has licensed the rights to its likeness and superstars for video games. The latest installment of the yearly game series was WWE 2K20, which was met with heavy criticism.
The issues included bugs and glitches in the game that had many upset fans, who thought the game was nearly unplayable at launch.
When the game was released, fans started the “#FixWWE2K20” hashtag on social media. It’s available for fans to play on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
