Is Roman Reigns' historic reign as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion doing more harm than good for the company?

Reigns captured the Universal Championship at WWE Payback in August 2020 and unified that title with the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 38.

The Tribal Chief has fended off challengers including Brock Lesnar, Edge, John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Matt Riddle, Rey Mysterio, and most recently Cody Rhodes to keep the gold.

Reigns' run as champion has been historic, and unprecedented in the modern era, but has its share of criticisms.

Given that Reigns signed a new contract with WWE that sees him compete far less, there have been far fewer championship matches over the past year.

Many believe that Reigns' title run has come at the expense of others who would have benefitted from dethroning the Tribal Chief.

Drew McIntyre in Cardiff, Sami Zayn in Montreal, and Sami Zayn at WrestleMania are all instances fans have pointed at as when the title should have changed hands.

Speaking on his Kurt Angle Show podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer shared his two cents and said that his issue isn't with Reigns.

Kurt added that this run has been "just too long" and said that wrestling is "not in the territories anymore" when long title reigns were more common.

The Olympian, a former WWE Champion in his own right, said that wrestling was less available during the territory days, which allowed longer reigns.

With fans now seeing WWE programming multiple times a week, Kurt's argument was that fans are fair to expect a title reign within a fair amount of time.

Reigns is not expected to defend his championship or appear in any fashion at the upcoming Backlash Premium Live Event.

WWE Backlash 2023 will take place on May 6, at San Juan, Puerto Rico, the WWE's first PLE in the area since January 2005.
