Drew McIntyre will remain with WWE for longer than first thought, but his long-term future with the promotion remains uncertain.
Last month, it was reported that McIntyre's deal with WWE is coming to an end and that the two sides remain distant over pay and his character. McIntyre was signed with WWE from 2007 to 2014 and returned to the promotion in 2017. The Scottish Warrior has not been featured on TV since WrestleMania 39 where he unsuccessfully challenged for the Intercontinental Championship.
While McIntyre's contract is set to expire within the next 12 months, his deal won't be over as soon as first thought. It was initially believed that McIntyre's deal would expire by the end of this year, and some had been hopeful he could debut for AEW at All In in August.
In an update from Fightful Select, it is revealed that McIntyre's contract will instead expire in early 2024. While no specific date was given, it was noted that McIntyre's deal will be finished before WrestleMania 40 in April 2024. McIntyre is working under the impression that this year's two-night event was his final WrestleMania.
While it’s been reported that he’s leaning towards not staying with WWE, we’re told that it’s more accurate to say that he doesn’t know what to do next. Many WWE talents are unsure as to how WWE's upcoming deal with Endeavor will affect them. WWE has reportedly taken a different approach to contract renewals in recent years.
Even prior to WrestleMania 39, McIntyre was dealing with the injury which has kept him off of TV. Fightful adds that McIntyre had been working hurt for some time prior to WrestleMania, but was adamant about competing in Los Angeles.
Despite being one of WWE's top stars, McIntyre has been "out of the loop" several times in recent months. In the recent draft, McIntyre was moved to Raw, something he was not aware of until his selection was aired.
Drew McIntyre is said to be very hands-on with his creative when applicable and has been at odds with WWE over his character. There have been pitches for Drew to turn heel, but he has been against the idea until it makes sense. McIntyre has been adamant about not making dramatic changes unless it creatively makes sense.
