Subscribers to the WWE Network and Peacock could soon see a lot of classic content from the International Championship Wrestling promotion.
As reported by PW Insider, during the most recent episode of WWE's Most Wanted Treasures, WWE archivist Ben Brown revealed that WWE has come into possession of 20 boxes of master tapes from the promotion. Brown noted that tapes had been left in a storage locker for decades until WWE acquired them though it remains unclear when exactly the tapes were acquired. Lanny 'The Genius' Poffo (obviously filmed prior to his passing) was on hand to authenticate the footage, some of which he had never seen before. Some clips shown included Bob Orton Jr. (the father of Randy Orton) and Poffo's brother 'Macho Man' Randy Savage.
Operating from 1987 to 1984, International Championship Wrestling was an independent promotion based in Lexington, Kentucky. The promotion was run by Angelo Poffo (the father of Lanny and Savage) and served as a rival to Ron Fuller's Southeastern Championship Wrestling and Nick Gulas' NWA Mid-American territory.
Lanny and Savage served as the two main stars of the promotion and traded the ICW Heavyweight Championship several times. Only two other men held the gold, those being Paul Christy and future NWA World Heavyweight Champion 'Rugged' Ronnie Garvin. After the demise of the promotion in 1984, Christy would start a new ICW though his company saw little success and closed before the decade was over.
Elizabeth Hulette would also get her start in wrestling as part of Poffo's ICW, as an on-screen host of programming under the name Liz Hulette. The graceful host would become better known as Miss Elizabeth to wrestling fans, and it was in ICW where she met her future husband Randy Savage.
