The WWE King and Queen of the Ring tournaments did not take place last month as initially planned, but that doesn't mean we'll never see new monarchs crowned.

Talk of a tournament began back in November of last year when it was reported that WWE was considering bringing back the King of the Ring event, over 20 years after the previous KOTR show. In March, it was confirmed that WWE King and Queen of the Ring would take place in May. This would be the first time a woman would be crowned Queen of the Ring, as WWE opted for Zelina Vega to be the 'Queen's Crown Tournament' winner in 2021.

One month later, WWE announced that the event would instead be WWE Night of Champions. The change was done to reflect the focus on championships, with the May 27, event marking 1,000 days as Roman Reigns as Universal Champion. The show also saw Seth Rollins be crowned the new World Heavyweight Champion.

Many fans were disappointed that the King and Queen of the Ring event was scrapped in favor of WWE Night of Champions. In an update from Fightful Select, sources in WWE said that they hadn’t heard of the tournament being rescheduled as of yet. They did note that King and Queen of the Ring was mentioned as something WWE has in their back pocket for a future show in Saudi Arabia.

The most recent tournament was in 2021 and saw Xavier Woods defeat Finn Balor in the finals to become King of the Ring. In the Queen's Crown Tournament, Zelina Vega defeated Doudrop in the finals.
