It looks like Gable Steveson is returning to the collegiate mats and competing once again.
In 2021 and 2022, Steveson won national titles at heavyweight for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Last May, it was revealed by the Gophers wrestling coach Brandon Eggum that Steveson was interested in returning to amateur wrestling as long as he could make things work with WWE.
After signing with WWE as a NIL Athlete in September 2021, he was drafted to WWE Raw in the 2021 WWE Draft. Last October, Steveson confirmed that he was training in Orlando, FL at the WWE Performance Center after stepping away following an ablation to treat Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
While it is unknown when Steveson will officially make his in-ring WWE debut, original plans called for him to make appearances on Raw last year to build to his in-ring debut at WrestleMania 38, Triple H has stated in the past that he pitched working with Steveson at Mania before he had his own health problems.
WWE has approved him to compete in upcoming freestyle tournaments. Steveson has stated he hopes to compete in the 2024 Olympics, although he would need WWE approval. He previously won a 2020 Olympic Gold Medal in freestyle wrestling.
On Monday, Steveson confirmed with FloWrestling that he wants to return to NCAA competition next year because he still has one year of eligibility left thanks to the 2021 season not counting towards eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic, although he will have to sort out scheduling details with the WWE before his return is official.
