William Regal was on hand to aid with a covert tryout of athletes during WWE Summerslam weekend in Detroit.
Regal returned to WWE in January of this year, after being granted an early release from AEW in late 2022. The British veteran was cut from WWE in January 2022, ending his 20+ tenure with the promotion. This release, part of several cuts to the backstage team of NXT, was said to personally affect Triple H, as the pair have been friends for years and Regal served as one of the Game's groomsmen during his actual wedding to Stephanie McMahon in 2003.
The Wrestling Observer reports that Regal was part of a "secret" tryout that saw WWE bring 54 college athletes to Detroit, Michigan ahead of SummerSlam. Regal was working in his official role with WWE as Vice President of Global Talent Development. Matt Bloom was also at the training and tryout event.
Notable athletes as part of the tryout included former linebacker at Arizona and Texas Tech Colin Schooler and San Diego State defensive lineman Anthony Luke. Luke already has a connection to WWE being the boyfriend of Alpha Academy member Maxxine Dupri. Team USA track athlete Destinee Brown, Kaylor Harris, who was a track athlete for Texas Tech and Central Florida, and former North Carolina track star Troy Yearwood were also part of the tryout.
Regal has said his return to WWE was so that he can spend more time with his son, NXT Superstar Charlie Dempsey. Regal was granted an early release from WWE on the condition that he does not appear on WWE programming for one year. Ironically, Regal's no-compete clause was ended early by Vince McMahon upon his January 2022 release from WWE, in order to allow the British veteran to join AEW.
