Vince McMahon was heavily involved in WWE's creative process prior to his surgery, despite recent comments to the contrary.

The 77-year-old billionaire returned to WWE in January of this year, less than six months after his retirement from the promotion. It is alleged that McMahon threatened to vote against any offers for WWE to be purchased, as well as vote against all offers made by broadcast partners unless he was brought back. McMahon's return saw his daughter Stephanie (who had replaced him as Chair of WWE) resign and Vince was unanimously elected to the position.

Upon McMahon's return to WWE, the Chairman was quick to make it clear that he would not be taking over as Head of Creative. Instead, McMahon claimed that his focus upon returning would be on the potential sale of WWE, which was confirmed in April, and negotiating with broadcast partners.

Despite this, McMahon hasn't kept clear from WWE's creative process and has made changes to programming of varying degrees. The biggest changes by McMahon affected the critically panned post-WrestleMania 39 episode of Raw.

During the post-Summerslam 2023 press conference, WWE's Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque spoke highly of McMahon, saying that the wrestling world would not be what it is today without the Chairman. The Game added that McMahon is not involved with the day-to-day work of WWE's Creative team.

"Is he day to day, no. Is he in it all the time? No. And if anybody has, he’s earned the right to do that.”

Despite the Game's comments, Fightful Select reports that McMahon was "heavily involved" in the final decisions of WWE Creative prior to his spinal surgery last month. Recent changes by the Chairman include the June 19, episode of SmackDown, which saw multiple matches announced for the show being cut.

... and while McMahon was in hospital, everyone backstage was wishing him well and thinking thank goodness he is not backstage.
