WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER believes the mat is sacred, but that doesn't mean comedy can't happen in wrestling.
GUNTHER has been a force to be reckoned with in WWE, especially after his Intercontinental Championship victory in June of last year. Since then, GUNTHER has retained in matches with Rey Mysterio, Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura, Braun Strowman, and others. GUNTHER's title defense with Sheamus at last September's Clash at the Castle event received praise from fans and those in the industry.
With Imperium allies Giovanni Vinci and Ludwig Kaiser by his side, GUNTHER is as serious as they come whenever he appears on WWE programming. Speaking to Sam Roberts in a recent interview though, the Austrian said there is a place for comedy matches.
"If it’s done the right way, there’s a place in time for almost everything in wrestling."
When asked if he'd be open to competing in a comedy match, the GUNTHER revealed that he's already competed in some matches of this style, which went down well.
"We’ll see what the future brings. I had a few occasions where I did something in my career that was a little bit out of this serious competitive wrestling stuff, and it usually worked really well."
GUNTHER named current Impact Wrestling authority figure Santino Marella and his 'Cobra' as an example of comedy working in wrestling, as well as last year's feud between Sami Zayn and Johnny Knoxville. The Jackass star would defeat Zayn at WrestleMania 38 in an 'Anything Goes' match that incorporated several stunts from the hit show.
