Last September's Clash at the Castle event proved to be a lucrative show for WWE, who were paid close to $3 million in subsidies by the Welsh government.
The September 3, 2022, event marked WWE's first major Premium Live Event in the UK in over 30 years, with 62,296 fans filling Principality Stadium. The main event of the show saw Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns successfully defend his title against Drew McIntyre. McIntyre had reportedly been under heavy consideration as the one to dethrone the Tribal Chief but lost thanks to the debuting Solo Sikoa.
An April 2023 press release inadvertently revealed how much WWE received from the Welsh government. As reported by Wrestlenomics, the release stated that the event "delivered a massive 10:1 return on investment by channeling £21.8 million back into the Welsh economy."
That figure is equivalent to just under $28 million, and with a 10:1 return, it implies that WWE received $2.8 million in subsidies to host the event. By comparison, WWE received $1.5 million and a non-monetary contribution of $300,000 to host Backlash 2023 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Clash At The Castle proved to be a huge success for WWE and the promotion would see similar success with WWE Money in the Bank last month. At that event, John Cena made a surprise appearance and teased the possibility of WrestleMania coming to London, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
