Peacemaker/Christopher Smith will remain a part of the DC Comics Cinematic Universe, director James Gunn has confirmed.

In a post from Threads, Gunn confirmed that the character portrayed by John Cena will be a part of the DCU's future. After a series of hit-and-miss releases, Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios in October of last year.

Gunn also confirmed that Viola Davies will return as Task Force X head Amanda Waller while relative newcomer Xolo Maridueña will return to his role as Jamie Reyes/Blue Beetle.

The 16-time WWE World Champion first portrayed Peacemaker in 2021's 'The Suicide Squad,' a soft sequel to the 2016 'Suicide Squad' film. Diving deep into the character, Cena would often wear the full Peacemaker costume when making public appearances and when walking the red carpet.

Even before 'The Suicide Squad' was released, HBO Max (today just MAX) ordered an eight-episode series in September 2020 about Cena's character. 'Peacemaker' made its TV debut in January 2022 with the show's first season receiving solid reviews. A second season as greenlit in February 2022.

Cena plays a jingoistic character who believes in achieving what he considers peace, even if it means killing men, women, and children. The first season of the Peacemaker TV series explored what drives the character to such extremes, such as his fraught relationship with his father (Terminator 2/The Marine's Robert Patrick.)

Gunn hasn't held back with his take on the character, calling Peacemaker a "piece of sh*t" and the superhero world's "biggest douchebag."
