WWE NXT has continued to tease the arrival of former AEW talent Brian Pillman Jr. with a video package that aired during No Mercy.

NXT's most recent event took place in Bakersfield, California, far removed from the gold brand's typical stomping ground in Florida. The show saw Trick Williams capture the NXT North American Championship from 'Dirty' Dominik Mysterio while Ilja Dragunov won the NXT Championship from Carmelo Hayes. In the main event, Becky Lynch, donned in tributes to Bray Wyatt and her family, retained the NXT Women's Championship against Tiffany Stratton in an Extreme Rules match.

During the most recent episode of WWE NXT, a video aired of a mysterious figure watching footage of a Los Angeles news show, the Cincinnati Bengals, and footage from WCW. It didn't take fans long to figure out that this viewer was Brian Pillman Jr, given that all three shows related to his father Brian Pillman. Pillman was in the tag team the Hollywood Blonds, played for the Bengals, and competed for WCW.

During NXT No Mercy, an extended version of that video promo was played. This package continued the same three clips, but also featured footage of several WWE Superstars. Fans may have noticed that those shown, including Charlotte Flair, Dominik Mysterio, The Bloodline, Von Wagner, and Randy Orton are all multi-generational wrestlers, as is Brian Pillman Jr. The promo ended with the 'mystery' man turning off the TV, with the lower half of Pillman's face being reflected on the TV screen.

Pillman first appeared with AEW in 2019 but wouldn't be under contract until the following year. In July, it was confirmed that Pillman's contract had expired and a new deal had not been signed, making the second-generation star a free agent. Within days of this news, Pillman was seen at WWE's Performance Center and would later speak about a huge opportunity in his future.
