Rich Hering has retired from his role with WWE, ending his 50+ years with the Sports Entertainment juggernaut.

PW Insider reports that Hering retired last month, shortly after Endeavor's acquisition of WWE was made final. While WWE would have wanted Hering to stay on as part of this new era for the company, Hering "decided it was his time to quietly step down and exit." It should be stressed that this was not a cut made by Endeavor and there are no signs of any ill-will between the two sides.

Hering began working with WWE while it was still owned by Vincent James McMahon, the father of TKO Chairman Vince McMahon and grandfather of Shane & Stephanie. At the time, the promotion was the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) and would change to the WWF in 1979 before becoming WWE in 2002.

In his decades with WWE, Hering oversaw medical and security departments, handled all risk management issues, and worked with state athletic commissions and other organizations on WWE events.

While Hering worked behind the scenes for decades, he did make an on-screen appearance. Fans may recall Hering serving as the officiant for the wedding of 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth at SummerSlam 1991. Two decades later, Hering would receive the Warrior Award as part of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2021. In his acceptance speech, Hering said it was an honor and was grateful for the Superstars and employees who helped transform the company into an international phenomenon.
