Dwayne Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions is working on a docuseries highlighting the demise of World Championship Wrestling.
It's been over two decades since WCW was purchased by Vince McMahon & the World Wrestling Federation for a pittance of approximately $2.5 million. Less than a year prior to McMahon's purchase of his competition in March 2001, SFX Entertainment offered AOL/Time Warner $500 Million for WCW but they were turned down. WCW would prove to be the biggest, most direct competition to Vince McMahon for decades, until the arrival of AEW in 2019.
A lot of factors went into the fall of WCW, and these will be covered by a new docuseries about the defunct promotion. Deadline reports that Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions studio is partnering with Vice Studios (of Dark Side of the Ring) to create the series. Details are scarce about the project, with no on-screen figures or a release date known at this time. It is also unclear how much influence WWE will have on the project given that they own the rights to WCW.
Seven Bucks Productions currently has over 60 film and TV projects in active development. Other projects in the works include new installments in the Fast and Furious and Jumanji franchises. Moana, a live-action remake of the animated feature, is also in the works with Johnson expected to star as Maui, the character he previously voiced.
Upcoming titles include Red One, greenlit by Amazon, directed by Emmy nominee Jake Kasdan and starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons, and Lucy Liu. Kate Warne, also for Amazon, an action-packed biopic starring Emily Blunt as the first female Pinkerton agent is also in the works.
