WrestleMania 40 was already shaping up to have 'greatest of all time potential,' but CM Punk's recent return puts a few other dream matches back in play.
Since Punk's return at Survivor Series, fans have been giddy at the prospect of him crossing paths with the likes of Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes. The Rollins feud is already taking off, but there's reportedly a fantasy matchup in the works for WrestleMania that would exceed any of these.
According to Fightful Select, WWE has taken preliminary steps to get CM Punk and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin in the ring together at WM40.
"WWE sources have indicated to Fightful Select that they're optimistic Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. CM Punk could happen, and the subject has been broached," said the report.
CM Punk vs. Steve Austin has far from a sure thing, but Punk back in WWE and Austin coming out of retirement last year make it a very possible scenario.
Austin hasn't competed in WWE since he came out of retirement last year. "The Rattlesnake" took on Kevin Owens at WWE WrestleMania 38 on April 2, 2022. Despite years off from wrestling, Austin showed that he could still put on a good match. He also looks to be in good shape, as he has posted his workouts on social media.
A potential match against Austin is something that Punk fans have wanted to see for a long time. It started when Punk and Austin had a backstage segment on the June 13, 2011, WWE Monday Night Raw episode.
They had another interaction in 2012 while promoting the WWE 13 game. It has been something that fans have been interested in, but it seems the company is as well.

Punk is currently not involved in a storyline or a feud. The former WWE Champion had a segment on the November 27 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, where he shared why he returned to the company.
He isn't scheduled for an upcoming WWE event at this time. However, the company seems to have big plans for him that should be interesting.
