Beckham' Director May Take 'Dallas' Reins
Who better to direct a classic piece of American cheese than a Kenya-born Brit?

Suddenly zooming toward production without a director, 20th Century Fox's "Dallas" feature may be heading Gurinder Chadha's way.

According to both industry trade papers, the "Bend It Like Beckham" director is in negotiations to take over "Dallas," very soon after original director Robert Luketic bailed on the long-gestating film.

Regency Enterprises and 20th Century Fox had hoped to have "Dallas" -- expected to star Jennifer Lopez, Luke Wilson, John Travolta and possibly Shirley MacLaine -- ready to begin production by Nov. 10. In a somewhat confusing chain of cause-and-effect, either the production delays caused Luketic to move over to Columbia Pictures' "21," or else Luketic caused production delays by departing to direct "21."

Either way, Chadha is meeting with the actors to keep them on the project which is, of course, based on the long-running CBS primetime soap opera.

Born in Kenya and raised in London, Chadha had her big break with "Beckham," a sleeper hit in 2002. Her other credits include "Bhaji on the Beach" and, most recently, "Bride & Prejudice."
