Power couple ... The Veronicas strike a pose after their win.
AUSTRALIAN pop duo The Veronicas were the big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards at the Sydney Superdome last night, with Australian acts scooping the pool despite receiving few nominations.
The Brisbane identical twins, Jess and Lisa Origliasso, took out two of the major gongs at the second annual MTV awards - Spankin' New Artist and Video Of The Year.
But close behind them was US pop star - and love rival - Ashlee Simpson. She also scored two awards, for Best Female Star and Best Pop Video.Australian acts dominated last night, grabbing seven of the 14 awards on offer, despite few local stars being nominated in most categories.
The Veronicas said they were surprised to win.
"It was crazy ... cause we didn't really put a list together of people to thank," Jess said.
They were also taken aback when event organisers took the award off them after they left the stage, joking that it had probably wound up in Simpson's dressing room.
Lisa is dating Simpson's ex, Ryan Cabrera, and the pair is rumoured to be feuding with the Boyfriend singer.
"I went and spoke to the girls. I set them straight and said, 'Look, we have bigger security than you ... we're brunette and we know a few kung fu moves'," Jess said.
But earlier in the night, Jess kept mum on the feud, not least because the pair is set to tour the US as Simpson's support act for two months during the northern summer.
"We met her for the first time yesterday," she told NEWS.com.au on the red carpet.
"We hadn't met her before that and she was very nice."
Bling king Snoop Dogg was the people’s choice for Best Hip Hop Video, accepting his award from 18-year-old tourism model Lara "Bloody" Bingle.
But he disappointed fans and media alike with his red carpet no-show earlier in the night.
It was unclear why the legendary rapper, arguably the most anticipated performer of the night, failed to hit the rug. But sources told NEWS.com.au his plane had been delayed, leaving his intimidating entourage to make an anonymous - and confused - arrival.
Australian Idol runner-up Shannon Noll took out Best Male Artist.
The country hero was joined by fellow Idol star Anthony Callea, who won the Viewers' Choice award.
UK lycra lovers The Darkness took out the gong for Best Rock Video for their single One Way Ticket. They opened the show in a blaze of glory, kicking off the night against a pyrotechnic display worthy of any self-respecting glam rockers.
UK pop crooner James Blunt won Song Of The Year for You're Beautiful, a track which has become the requisite soundtrack to weddings across the country.
"It's a huge honour to have a song that came from a personal place to be related to by other people and made part of their own lives," he said.
While the song didn't help his love life, the former UN peacekeeper said he was glad to serve as an aphrodisiac for others.
"If I can possibly help any man to get laid then I'm just willing to be of service," he joked.
Ex-Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett was honoured with the Free Your Mind award for humanitarian work and encouraging freedom from intolerance and prejudice.
The legendary rocker-turned-politician received the gong from Oscar-winner Russell Crowe.
"It’s a genuine surprise and an honour to be able to take an award of this kind," Garrett said.
"I looked at some of the award winners who've won in previous years - and particularly in other territories - and I was very humbled by that sort of company.
"But I expressly accept this award not for myself but on behalf of the community groups and the individuals that are working to make the world a better place."
