MTV awards host ... Ashlee Simpson
MTV Awards organisers were yesterday under fire from irate celebrities and fans outraged over the event, described as a "shambles".
Celebrity guests complained they were left for hours without food, performers were irate over sound problems and crowd members said they were "treated like cattle" as overseas reports surfaced bagging the credibility of the music showcase. After being made to wait for hours at the Sydney SuperDome, Powderfinger's Bernard Fanning said he was fed up with the circus by the time of the event.
"Eight of us have been stuck in a room bored out of our f...ing minds for the last eight hours," he said.
The Darkness guitarist Dan Hawkins also fired a shot at the event, saying it was well below average.
"When they're accepting an award and giving a speech, it's like, all you hear is mumbling," he said.
"I was next to Ashlee Simpson when we gave an award to her and I couldn't hear a f...ing word she said."
Even the UK press joined the panning, reporting the astonishing award wins by junior burger Ashlee Simpson over the likes of Madonna.
MTV competition winners were also livid, saying they were made to wait outside the venue for four hours and were told not to bring personal belongings, including food and drink.
"We were desperate for a drink. We were eventually taken to a room that resembled a school canteen after a food fight and most of the food was gone and there was no water," one fan said.
At the after party at the Hilton's Zeta bar, celebrity guests including Erica Baxter and Snoop Dogg got acquainted while others were upset by "man-handling" MTV security guards - with the likes of Nash Edgerton, Annalise Braakensiek and Koby Abberton embarrassingly being stopped at the door.
