In an interesting bit of timing, there were quite a few Wellness tests given backstage at today's ECW/Smackdown taping in Cleveland, Ohio. One source estimated over two dozen WWE performers were given urine tests this afternoon. Since WWE doesn't give talent advance notice, there's no way to know whether the testing was already planned when the SI.com article naming several talents implicated in the steroid investigation broke yesterday afternoon. That said, it's entirely conceivable that a larger number of performers were admininstered tests in the wake of all the media attention.

The implication of World Wrestling Entertainment performers in Sports Illustrated's coverage of the Florida steroid investigation has spread all over the mainstream media. The subject was discussed in great detail today by Dave Scherer on his PWInsider.com Elite Audio Hotline. For more information on the Elite section, click here.

Richard Trionfo sent the following...ESPN’s Outside the Line First Report, they covered the steroid story that was reported on SI.com and other sites, including espn.com. They mentioned Randy Orton, Edge, and Gregory Helms but did not mention Rey Mysterio or Kurt Angle. It also mentioned that there were no comments from the wrestlers or the WWE. The story talked about the WWE policy prohibiting performance enhancing drugs. Bob Ley mentioned that the WWE would not say if any wrestlers have tested positive under the policy.

A number of readers sent word that Colin Cowherd talked in detail on the subject today on ESPN Radio, including nearly ten minutes on the passing of Eddie Guerrero in 2005.

As noted last night here on the site, WWE's official statement in response to the SI.com article was:

STAMFORD, Conn., March 19, 2007-- All of the allegations set forth in a recent SI.com article mentioning WWE predate the initiation of WWE’s current Talent Wellness Program. This WWE program prohibits the use of performance enhancing drugs, as well as other prescription drugs which can be abused, if taken for other than a legitimate medical purpose pursuant to a valid prescription from a licensed and treating physician. For purposes of WWE's policy, prescriptions obtained over the Internet and/or from suppliers of prescription drugs from the Internet are not considered to have been given for a legitimate medical purpose.

i think it's wise of the wwe to administer tests as they can't afford anybody else to become involved in the investigation
