A New Zealand soldier has minor injuries to his hand and lower leg after an accident while clearing his weapon at an unloading bay in Bagram, Afghanistan yesterday.

The injuries are not life threatening.

New Zealand Army spokeswoman Major Denise Mackay said the soldier was transported to Camp Lacey Hospital in Bagram Air Field where he underwent surgery to clean the wounds.

He is expected to remain in hospital for up to three days before returning to his duties.

An inquiry into the accident is under way.

The soldier is part of the seventh rotation of troops serving as New Zealand's Provincial Reconstruction Team (NZPRT) in Afghanistan.

He is based with the National Support Element in Bagram.

The eight rotation of troops to serve as the NZPRT departed for Afghanistan yesterday and the seventh rotation will return to New Zealand in early May.
