In an article in the Boston Herald hyping "The Contender," Steve Austin says: "I would really like to be able to cry on cue. Just because I think it's a great skill!" Austin said he felt he had a pretty good handle on his "Condemned" character, Army Special Operative Jack Conrad, until he was asked to read through an emotional scene with the character's abandoned girlfriend, played by Madeline West. "I was sitting in my trailer eating and Madeline was sitting on the couch reading it through with me," Austin recalled. "And then all of a sudden she just starts crying; all these tears start running out of her eyes and I'm thinking, ‘All right. I'm out of my league. She's pretty good."
