The 'prohibited portal' has opened once again after it was confirmed that WWE Superstar IYO SKY will compete for the Marigold Wrestling promotion.
At Marigold’s event at Korakuen Hall on June 11, Nanae Takahashi and Utami Hayashishita faced off in the show's main event. After the match, SKY appeared on the screen and issued a challenge to Hayashishita for a match at Marigold’s ‘Summer Destiny’ show on July 13. The event will take place at the legendary Ryōgoku Sumo Hall.
SKY's involvement with Marigold is huge, but shouldn't come as a surprise. Following the company's launch, Marigold founder Rossy Ogawa shared his hopes to work closely with WWE. SKY's name was one that Ogawa had been seeking, alongside Damage CTRL ally Kairi Sane. Both Sane and SKY have worked with Ogawa in the past during his time as the head of STARDOM.
Whether Sane joins Marigold or not, the promotion and WWE will continue to work together thanks to the presence of Giulia. Another STARDOM alum who's previously worked under Ogawa, Giulia is expected to join WWE soon but is also set to compete a handful of times for Marigold. The former NJPW Strong Women's Champion competed at Marigold's inaugural event where she suffered an injury.
After decades of not working with others, WWE has opened its 'prohibited portal' and is eager to work with others. WWE NXT and TNA Wrestling have been working together in recent weeks with both parties hoping to see more crossover. This crossover comes mere months after WWE Superstars were allowed to compete at GCW's Bloodsport X event.
As for what future crossovers take place, that remains to be seen, but this is indeed a new era for WWE.
