Pro-wrestling might be gearing up for Wednesday night wars akin to what took place over two decades ago on Monday nights. With AEW set to premiere their weekly television show on TNT on Wednesday, October 2nd, WWE is negotiating to counter them by running NXT head-to-head against it.

WWE’s attempts to counter-program AEW’s weekly TV show were addressed recently in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

“It’s also not a secret that WWE is looking to counter-program this show with an FS 1 airing of NXT,” wrote Dave Meltzer. He would continue to say it is not yet known if NXT will remain at 1-hour or expand to 2 beginning in the fall.

“The talks are serious enough that in a FOX call to Northeastern affiliates last week, they brought up that possibility. Sources within WWE had confirmed the idea is being strongly talked about and the reason was competition with AEW, and the idea was fairly recent in planning, coming from the AEW signing with TNT.”

WWE is also planning on having more main roster Superstars on NXT come October. It was also noted, however, that the main roster stars would not take over the show but rather compliment the current roster.

There was some speculation that AJ Styles and the O.C could be headed to NXT based on comments the Club made to DX on RAW Reunion. Styles said he knows where NXT is and isn’t afraid to go there. The report in the Observer noted specifically that this angle was not happening, however.
